Geography

History

  • The first Monarch of Occidal, King Islod was a powerful wizard and founded the Haradrial School of Magic during his reign.  After the founding of this school, many more were founded in the kingdom.

Life and Society

  • Occidal is the magic capital of southern Therra.  Occidal is the site of first human wizard's college in Therra, Haradrial School of Magic.  In addition, every city in Occidal has at least one wizard's college. Also The Golden Tower in Occidal is home to The Sorcerers' Circle.
  • Occidal has a much higher number of magic-users compared to neighboring countries.  In addition to the wizards who graduated from one of Occidal's magic schools, there are many sorcerers from the country.  This is not because more people have the natural gift, but because The Sorcerers' Circle is very active in Occidal and searches for gifted individuals to train.
  • The people of Occidal, the Occidali, are known for being pleasantly disposed and optimistic.  This is largely because the country is isolated from many of the conflicts that plague Therra.
  • Even though magic is large part of Occidal's society, it is not pervasive.  Most peasants in rural areas have never met a wizard.  On the other hand, magic is very common in the cities.  Every city has a Mage Quarter where the wizard's college(s) are located. Also there are many vendors of magical goods.

Character Classes

  • Barbarian: The wild and savage Barbarian is a rare sight in Occidal.  Many people may fear Barbarians because they are reminded of the savage orcs that live just south of Occidal.  Barbarians from Occidal are most likely to hail from a small mountain village in the north of the country.
  • Bard: Bards are found in every town and city in Occidal, and many can be seen traveling the roads.  They are respected by the general public for their musicianship, but many wizards and sorcerers look down on their limited arcane ability.
  • Cleric: The clerics of Occidal generally follow White/Moon or White/Earth, but there are clerics of most good and neutral deities in Occidal.  Open worship of evil gods is punishable by death.  Clerics are highly respected for the magic they control.
  • Druid: Druids are rare in Occidal, but can be found in the forests.
  • Fighter: Fighters are common in Occidal.  Many adventuring fighters are ex-members of the army.  Fighters could be from an urban or rural area.
  • Monk: Monks are almost non-existant in Occidal. They are seen as mysterious, but not especially threatening.
  • Paladin: The champions of good are common in Occidal.  Most worship White/Moon, White/Cold, or White/Earth.  Paladins of White/Moon typically aspire to become Spellswords.
  • Ranger: Many Rangers serve as scouts or guides throughout the wilderness of Occidal.
  • Rogue: Rogues are everywhere in the cities of Occidal.  Many join Thieves' Guilds for protection and support.
  • Sorcerer: Due the Sorcerer's Circle, there are many sorcerers in Occidal.  They are respected for their natural magical ability.  Many sorcerers like to upstage wizards and their "stupid books."
  • Wizard: Wizards are common and well respected, due to the many wizard's colleges in Occidal.

The Arts

  • Occidal is known for its sculpture.  The various wizard's colleges contain some of the most iimpressive pieces in all of Therra.  Some of the sculptures of magical monsters are scarily realistic.

  • Tharivol College of Necromany:  Named after its founder, a powerful Grey Necromancer, Tharivol is one of the lesser known of Occidal's wizard's colleges.  Located in the mountains in the north of the country, Tharivol takes advantage of its isolation by teaching its students spells that most people would frown upon.  Even so, the school promotes the responsible use of its teachings. Tharivol graduates less than 10 necromancers every year.
  • Occidal College of War Magic: The Occidal college of War Magic, located in Haradrial,  is the primary training location for the Warmages of Occidal's army.  Tuition is free, but graduates must serve 5 years in Occidal's Army.
