 Maddocks Gate History

 

The history of Maddocks Gate begins with the young Captain Maddock, the leader of a gaurd unit in ancient X, which would later become Waterdeep. He and his unit constantly had to defend the bustling from a series of pirate attacks. The attacks were managable at first, however that didn't last long. With the formation of Port O' Bounty, pirates began to plan a serious raid on the port town. Maddock had heard of the attack, and began warning people to evacuate. Only he and two gaurds in fact heeded the warning, and began moving southward. He was unsatisfied with any terrains, fearing the pirates would settle. Hundreds of miles later, he found a plateu with a mountain on its eastern border. He decided this region was good enough, and began building with his comrades. Eventually, they had three houses and a defensive tower. The defense was needed, as lizardfolk began to strike. Maddock was succesfull in defense, a skill that would later prove even more essiential. X eventually did get attacked, and they were dominated by the fleet of pirate ships. People fled, under the guidance of one of Maddocks friends, to Maddocks encampment. Thousands of refugees had to pitch tent in Maddocks small establishment. After a while, the lizardfolk proved a threat no more, as Maddocks gaurds grew in size. A wall needed to be built, because Maddock knew strikes would worsen. He found Mithril Hall, and opened up relations. Mithril Hall invested heavily in the growing city, a relationship that would prove useful throughout all of Maddocks Gates' history. A small wall was constructed, and Maddock began charging refugees as they entered his city. Soon enough, word spread and kingdoms from the south discovered Maddocks Gate as an entrance to the north. Because of the desert in the west, and the mountains in the east, the plateu proved to be the only way to cross. Maddock spent millions of his newfound revenue building a great ramp to his city. Maddocks son would be the next ruler. The lineage continued for 230 years, untill the government was re-established. Maddocks Gate became the central point of Therra, and they began assembling an army to retake X. A forty-year campaign began, and X was conquered. Waterdeep was born, and Maddocks Gate would hold a tax that would finance its great projects of the future. The generations would bring great things, including the Wall, which encompassed the entirety of Maddocks Plateu. Over 20 major attacks would be launched on the established but empty Maddocks Gate, each would strengthen the Gaurd of Maddocks. Maddocks Gate real estate became prime, and thousands would come to buy large amounts. Eventually, districts arose based on kingdoms investments. They would later be disestablished based on the civil wars they waged. Because of the entrance fee, many could not afford to leave, creating a massive poverty community within the walls. The walls borders were eventually reached by real estate investors, and buildings began to arise. Grey Elves were hired to construct the sewage system, which would encompass a huge percentage of the city. Now the city is infested with filth, rich, poor and nobles alike. It is a rich kingdom infested with poverty. A paradox exists within the walls of Maddocks Gate, but it is nonetheless the Hub of the World.
