 The Fly-in-Jar Scheme

Murkle sure shot, the halfing who famously throws skip rocks, has often challenged Garret the breaker, who uses daggers. Garret has always had the slight advantage, because of sheer numbers. While Murkle can throw his skip rocks alarmingly fast, Garret is the legend who can throw 160 daggers in a minute. The Fly-in-Jar scheme was how Murkle used his wits to beat Garret, and it worked with amazing success. Murkle obtained a high qaulity jar from a glassblower somewhere in the merchants quarter of Maddocks Gate. He paid around 3 gold for the high qaulity jar. He proceeded to purchase fresh fruit from the market, apparently tomatoes. He then crushed the tomatoes in the bottom of the jar, and got a small amount of cloth to cover the jar with small holes cut into it, exactly big enough for a fly to fit in. He left the jar outside a small appartment he had been renting, already in a seedy district. After a few days, the tomatoes became rotten and his prey began to come. After five days, the jar was filled with flys and their maggots. He used a metal lid with a few tiny holes for breathing and secured the top, so flys could not escape. After another week, the flies had quadroupled in population and the food was nearly useless. He waited another few days for the maggots to mature, and began practicing his technique. Murkle was so adept at using his skip rocks, he could bounce them off of a target and have them hit another target. He knew he could do it with small birds, but he wasn't sure if he was good enough to do it with flies. So, he went to an empty field and let loose the flys. To his amazement, he was actually able to hit a dozen or so, and ricoche caused havoc. Confident he could do more and more, he redid the experiment until he mastered his technique.

He then began telling bards that he wished to challange the unbeatable Garret. Just months before, Garret had amazed Murkle by destroying every mug in the Mighty Ringle, a large bar in Three Rivers. That is, every mug but the one Murkle hid. Not content with his cheap victory, Murkle sought to beat Garret in a game he was sure he could win. After a few days of searching, their paths finally crossed within none other than the Boars Head inn. Dozens of people watched, many of them bards, as Murkle issued the challenge publicly, to Garrets face. "Ha, you challenge Garret the Breaker? Foolish, but of course I accept. You couldn't beat me in a throwing contest, ever." was Garrets documented response. Murkle smiled, and produced the grotesque Jar of Flies. Thousands of tiny insects buzzed within their glass prison, soon to be released only to die. Garret looked into the jar suspiciously. He questioned anyone ability to kill the flies. Without saying a word, Murkle smashed the jar on the ground, releasing thousands of the winged creatures. He began throwing his rocks, each bouncing devestatingly off of one fly to another. Less than a minute later, 1,403 flies were found dead on the premises. 20 small skiprocks were found. Garret looked on with amazment, and stormed out of the bar without a word.
