Captain Daz'un

Page history last edited by Anonymous 2 yrs ago

I directly stole the idea of telling the story 3rd person through a bard from Kyle.

"I have spent some time compiling information about the Legendary Captain Daz'un, and this is my collection so far:"

Excerpt from the Tales of Tomkey, page 217.

Under normal circumstances I would continue on this page to further describe the malignant growth of the Kingdom of Gry but I have come across a curious escapade in which I must reserve atleast a page for. I had recently been commissioned by Lord Chesterfield to make a small voyage towards the northern kingdoms to collect a detailed account of the growth of Gry. You see, I have already compiled a brief timeline of its growth through other taleweavers but I knew that I had to see the gloom for myself. Unfortunately, Lord Chesterfield had arranged for me to travel in a small ferry, but due to prior mishappenings (sailing for 2 weeks on a tiny vessel with lots of beans and dirty dwarves doesn't make for a comfortable journey) I had thoroughly convinced him to allow me to ride upon The Harper, a beautiful commercial ship designed for shipping fine products and the social elite. I had enjoyed the company of aristocracy, but each and every night I noticed a hooded figure uneager to make himself apparent. I couldn't care less, however, and continued fine dining and comfortable sailing. It wasn't until the 7th day that I firsthand saw the great pirate who never was. Captain Daz'un Do'baen was that hooded figure.

Captain Daz'un is known faintly throughout the realms, but is considered a shadowy reminder of the past glory days of buccaneers. From the few written accounts of Daz'un we find that he exemplifies the iconic buccaneer: Handsome, daring, charming, fearful, witty, dashing, and so forth. His skill with the blade also became legend as the golden age of pirates came and passed. Many don't even believe he was real; the proof is minimal. However, stories of his daring escapades continue to pass throughout the realms. 'Twas the 7th eve of my journey that I would come to see his past glory relived and my hide spared.

On the 7th eve as I sat in my cabin quietly compiling the story of Gry when the light, soothing rocking of the ship put me to sleep. I was rudely awakened by screams from nearby apartments and as I wearily got up to investigate I could hear movement and yelling on deck. I immediately went up to find out what was so important that deserved to break my slumber only to discover that a squadron of three or more known pirate ships sailed on the horizon. A storm raged on as useless crew members scurried around the deck pretending to know what to do. A cliché night for a pirate attack, I know, but it happened. All of the wealthy travellers hid themselves under their sheets like elven boys do when they believe they hear Selnai creeping closely. Pathetic. I, although brave, consider myself useless in the act of combating or avoiding pirates, so I made myself useful by barging into the captain's quarters and hiding so that this sacred tome of knowledge would survive the onslaught of pirates. If you are reading this now, and contain a dose of intelligence then you can predict the outcome of our little escapade with the pirates. Anyway, through the window I could see what was happening on deck. As I was just getting warm I saw that mysterious hooded figure emerge from below the deck and he immediately began directing the crew men. The figure dropped his hood and under it I saw a slender Drow with long wavy white hair and a dark black cape wisping in the wind. He held a rapier at his side, wore a wide rimmed hat and his belt was filled with trinkets ranging from a lute to a vial of poison. His commanding voice apparently worked, and the flow of the crewmen suddenly became harmonious. A small escape boat was rigged with oars extending its width and lanterns at the end of each oar. Lanterns were also place on the front and back, and they were all lit. The boat was lowered with just one man, and the lanterns on the main ship were all extinguished at once. The storm raged on throughout the night, and in the distance I could see the pirates slowly approaching the small, luminescent boat that drifted as the waves carried it. Eventually, however, I succumbed to my desire and dosed off.

I awoke early the next morning, and upon looking out the window I saw one of the pirate ships blazing fool speed towards The Harper. Not knowing what to do, the crewmen were all sharpening their blades and preparing for battle. Apparently atleast two had been diverted by the drow. As the boat neared, we realized it wasn't the pirates after all but instead the nobly dressed drow steering the vessel by himself. It was the same vessel we saw the previous night, but lacking anyone but the lone drow. Cheers erupted from the ill-prepared for battle crewmen who luckily avoided an almost certain fate. I, for one, became very curious as to how the drow managed to do such a magnificent feat. His grandiose bravado was interesting enough, but the success of his actions was astonishing. Soon enough, the two boats were looselyconnected with a series of ropes, and the drow jestfully called the people from The Harper onto the smaller ship. Everyone went in excitement to hear the drow's story. I was the first one there, with pen and paper ready. "Hello comrades," he happily said. He approached the astounded captain and said "Your luck is in, you lived the night. But I won't be needing your services any longer, as you see I found a new boat." With that, he quickly ran across a loose rope connecting the two ships onto The Harper. He did this with such rapidity that everyone was confused, including myself. As he stepped onto The Harper he slashed the connecting ropes and smiled as the only things tieing the two ships dangled into the ocean. I was completely taken by surprise, as was everyone else. It appeared only a few nobles stayed behind on The Harper, and they remained below deck. "Oh, I almost forgot," exclaimed the drow cheerfully. He took out a small pouch and tossed it to the captain on the desolate ship we were all now trapped upon. The captain opened it and saw the meager gold that paid for the drows original fare on the voyage. He took his cap off and took a graceful bow, and with that he strided arrogantly towards the steering chamber and began sailing the ship out towards the open sea. I was not told until later that night that The Harper, including the resources it carried, was worth well over 60,000g. This number astonished me, but I couldn't help but smile at the lone drow. His playful nature amused me, and he did save us from the pirates (well, the people we originally dubbed the pirates. In fact, he was a pirate himself and acquired a massive fortune. I still plan to find out how he managed to deter that fleet), so I had little to complain about. It was not until I went below deck and saw a massive stockpile of food (that would last this ship and its passengers for atleast 3 months, estimates say) that I discovered the drow's name. With the food was left a small notecard in elegant manuscript that read:

Have a safe voyage home. Captain Daz'un Do'Baen.

I smiled and laughed at the fact that I had been saved and tricked by the Legendary Captain Daz'un.

It came to my knowledge a little while ago that Captain Daz'un is also a bard. Although I was unable to personally attend the annual meeting of the greatest loreweavers in Therra, I was able to secure some information concerning the drow. He attended the annual meeting upon the Flampinfen, where great bards share their stories and their information is compiled into the massive tome of the History of Therra. This concerns the night that I was saved by the Captain. He personally explains his grandiose maneuver. I omitted certain elements that I have already explained in my own tome.

...I had been lying in the small escape boat for some time now. I was getting excited at what was about to happen. Never before have I single-handedly stolen a ship but because I cannot bring myself to slaughter the members of The Harper (although I could, without doubt) I decided to retrieve them a ship to go home. This works out for me because the only killing I must do are other pirates themselves. And who mourns over the death of a pirate? (Unless it's me, of course). I assumed that the pirates that were about to apprehend the vessel I quietly floated in were going to be unintelligent bafoons, and I was proven correct due to various mistakes my enemies made. I mean, they were dumb enough to fall for a simple decoy. All I did was extinguish the lights on the main ship and put a few on this escape boat. When I closed in upon the first ship, the pirates were so kind as to raise me up to 'interrogate me' instead of just slaughtering me on the spot (although it wouldn't be easy). That was the first mistake. I maintained my elegant, heroic, almost epic pose with my hand on my rapier as they slowly lifted me to their demise. As I became level with them, I took a graceful bow and courteously said, "Good day, fellows. It appears you have proven yourselves useless already." I winked, and an angered pirate charged at me headlong. I easily sidestepped and he flew passed me and plunged into the icy depths. "Well, I was expecting a warmer welcome at the very least," remarked I. At this, it became an all out brawl. I quickly maneuvered towards the center to avoid being sprawled overboard, and I elegantly parried incoming sword swings. After a minute or so of simple parries, I had become cornered against the lieutenenats quarters. They waited for my move. Second Mistake. "Shall we dance?" Asked I. At that I began a marvelous dance that flowed harmoniously to music being silently played in my head. Step right, step left, back up, twirl. My dance was more elegant than a prince on his wedding day. My rapier was twirled around me in an intangible flurry that easily struck down several members of the enemy crew. I danced for a while, mocking my opponents at every dodge and parry I performed. Flourishes elevated my dance to raw beuty. After a few graceful minutes, I had downed the small crew of about 18 on this ship. It was the smallest of the three. By this time, the center ship had clearly noticed the battle and prepared itself to fight me. I got a rope and constructed a crude grappling hook, and launched it at the center lookout podium upon the center mast. My throw was perfect and the inhabitants of the central ship looked all too eager for me to swing across. I hate to ruin other peoples day, so I did as they wanted and gracefully swung across. I landed on a rope ladder leading up the mast, and I shouted from my position, "Let me have a word with your captain and you all will be spared. It is not worth losing lives over this petty little dispute. I have a very minor inquiry for him." But already pirates were climbing the rope ladder with cutlasses in their mouths. Oh, and it was also raining. Cliché? I think so. Anyway, I drew a small handcrossbow, already loaded, and shot at one of the pirates. He fell back immediately. I drew my second one and fired again. Another one downed. Drow poison is about the only good thing to come from my race. Soon enough, the captain angrily walked out of his cabin and shouted for the crewmen to back off. "It is not worth losing any more. If he wants to talk, we shall talk." Now this is my kind of man. I climbed down, cleaned myself off and followed the captain. One unfortunate pirate attempted to stab me in the back, but I noticed and before he could do so I stabbed him through the heart with my sword. I cleaned it as I entered the cabin. "I ask of you three things," said I. He gruffed. "One, I ask that the boat you were stalking today is left to me. I am not a big fan of competition over my salary. Two, I ask that no one else fights me. All I need is one of these three ships to head towards my target. Three, I ask that I get a new cape. One of your crewmen made a nasty tear in it. It won't do." "It's hard to bargain with you, but if I lose more crewmen I will lose future profit. Although I could easily squash you through sheer numbers, my loss is not worth you. Take the cursed ship that you tainted and begone!" said the captain with a weak attempt to be brave. "Oh, and one more thing. Remember me," and at that I through a card at him almost like a boomerang. It read my name and a nice message. He read it and was infuriated, clearly fuming. I winked and turned, leaving the cabin. The crewmen partways for me, knowing that I had succeeded in my wish. For good measure I slipped a timed blastdisk onto the main ship as I went back to the first boat I had been upon. I had hoped that the pirates would try to kill me, and would regret their wish. Just to prove myself, I told the crewmen that they would perish also if they attacked me again. Sure enough, as soon as I safely boarded the first ship, hails of bolts and arrows were fired upon me. Due to my agile nature, only one made contact. It was a minor arm wound, easily fixed. I counted in my head until the bomb would go off, and as it neared its detonation I removed my hat and took a graceful bow. With that, part of the ship exploded in a messy wreck, with wood chips flying everywhere. I had place it so it would cause the boat to sink, and I mearly chuckled as the boat slowly sunk, as the top portion was burning. I don't know who safely boarded the final ship, becuase I had already headed back. I was weary from my night's work, but my true catch was yet to begin...
