Azanbar, City of Wonder

General Info

  • Azanbar is the small city of gnomish ingenuity. Alot of commoners don't believe it to be real, however many trinkets throughout Therra say otherwise.
  • Azanbar is largely ran off of steam power.
  • It's entrance is hidden so travellers to Aphra cannot stumble across it. The gnomes take great pride in their work and do not want greedy humans to come across it without their consent.
  • Flampinfen was built by Azanbarrian Gnomes
  • Rimble Tinkerbolt, the famous Gnome Engineer was born and raised in Azanbar.

The City

  • The city is largely ran off of steam power, from underground geysers that produce the steam necassary to run the city.
  • The city is a large golden dome. However, under the gold is glass so the gnomes can retract the gold through steampower and use the city as a greenhouse to feed the populace. This is so the gnomes can grow their own food. It works like a giant greenhouse. For cooling in the intense desert sun, the gnomes use condensed steam as well as condensation for watering the plants.
  • The entrance to the city is a small canyon. In the back of the canyon is a small resevoir of water that must be swimmed through in order to enter the city. Gnomes do most of their travel via air or water. Their city is close to the shoreline. Travelling merchants are unable to see the dome, however.
  • The steam is compressed and stored into massive metal ducts that traverse the city, under the ground. It is is channeled into smaller vein lines to power individual buildings.
  • From the city spawning out like roots out towards the desert is a massive underground city, where the Gnomes actually sleep and eat. At various locations throughout the desert, peole see strange kites from a tiny hole in the ground and other strange devices. The kites are used by the gnomes to detect weather, pressure, wind velocity, as well as other simple measurements.
  • There are hundreds of hidden entrances and exits in both the dome and the underground ducts.
  • An underground steampower tram runs the gnomes from their homes to and from the actual city, where their work is performed. All city activity is within it's borders.
  • The tunnels also extend towards the shoreline, with hidden entrances under water where gnomish experimental submarines enter and exit.
  • Flampinfen has a docking platform out in the ocean. The gnomes did this to avoid the city being found. Flampinfen members wishing to return home or go to Azanbar ride an underwater tram to transport them from the pad to the mainland. The platform is on a tiny island surrounded by trees.
  • The steam power runs everything in the city from transportation to manufacturing equipment.

Populace

  • The city is made up of 99% Gnomes, with a tiny percent of visiting intellects.
  • The population is about 50,000.

Economy

  • Azanbar is self-sufficient, although it still gets royalties on the massive revenue generated by Flampinfen. Small, useful trinkets designed by Azanbarrian engineers are found all over Therra.

Government

  • The government of Azanbar is full democracy with any Gnomes over 21 years of age able to vote on any city decisions. The city is run by a paid council of 25 men that are voted for every year. They handle the basic city management and every month a full city meeting is held in the town square where people can vote on issues brought up by the council.
